While Beachgoers Fled Violence, Popular Image Shows Rescuer Sprinting ‘All Out’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the renowned beach as her personal space. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, noticed cracking sounds echoing around the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” she explains. Stepping out of her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore signaled something was wrong.

As she stood on the avenue, talking to a duo who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up from behind. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one heading in the path that all the others was trying to get away from, and hauling that large equipment and unshod … He moved into something that surely every instinct would signal you to go in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle running.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of courage in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and ambulance crews attending to numerous the injured.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to emerge from the local area, with the beach facility adjacent to the site of the incident serving as a temporary treatment center. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen responding bravely, including rushing into the surf to save people who were struggling.

In the days after the tragedy, comments of gratitude flooded in. An online statement conveyed thanks for the responders who demonstrated that “compassion will always triumph over hatred”.

The team of rescuers published a message, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the care directed at our team,” the organization commented. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it helps those impacted.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many full-time beach safety officers, stated that the crew rose to the occasion from the second the shooting commenced through to late that night.

“We have heard so many emotional stories, but the widely-circulated picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” stated a local official.

“Our lifeguards show selflessness every day in ensuring our world-famous shores secure for visitors, but what we observed on that day should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the terror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have witnessed in the face of such evil.”
