Labour MPs Criticize Starmer's U-turn on Workers' Rights as 'Utter Disloyalty'

Keir Starmer is facing backbench anger after ministers scrapped intentions to give workers immediate safeguards against unfair dismissal, a reversal violating the party's election pledges.

MPs Voice Concerns

Lawmakers featuring an ex-government official who led the worker protection legislation expressed apprehension about the concession announced by the government.

Government officials have eliminated the initiative to scrap the 24-month eligibility timeframe for workers to submit unfair firing complaints and allow them to do so from the first day in a new job, to try to get the legislation through parliament.

Government Impasse

The legislation became trapped in a confrontation among peers and MPs over the original plan to offer labor protections on day one, including proposals to ban "exploitative" zero-hours contracts.

The government now intends to introduce the right over unfair dismissal following half a year employment instead, although additional first-day entitlements to fatherhood time off and health-related payments are still due to move forward, becoming active in April 2026.

Resistance and Disapproval

The parliamentary representative for the Teesside area characterized the decision as a "total abandonment" and pledged to advocate for its overturning.

"We cannot support that compromise solution."

"This constitutes flawed decision-making and I will campaign to overturn this compromise."

Another Labour MP voiced disappointment about the lack of consultation, stating: "There has been absence of dialogue with parliamentary colleagues. The Lords don't have primacy concerning campaign pledges, so why have we capitulated??"

Wider Consequences

A third Labour MP remarked: "Companies need not concern themselves about immediate protections, while employees have much to lose from businesses who resists first-day entitlements."

The former employment minister asserted that the decision "clearly represents a broken promise."

Government Justification

The learning department head declared remained a "substantial likelihood" the implementation of the labor reform proposal could have experienced setbacks without the cabinet's decision regarding a change regarding immediate safeguards against unjust firing.

"There has been discussion on the point around unjust firing and the qualifying timeframe among companies, trade unions and ministers, and subsequent to that dialogue consensus has emerged about the way forward, that demonstrates progress."

The minister stressed that "It means that the time limit will decrease from 24 months to half a year, and that runs alongside important day-one rights concerning illness compensation and concerning childbirth absence."

"Yet the threat existing that if we didn't make progress, those crucial protections wouldn't come into force beginning second quarter 2026."

Following inquiry concerning whether it represented an unfulfilled pledge, the official replied: "Within the election platform, what we said was that we planned to cooperate with labor organizations, with companies, with public organizations, through dialogue regarding such entitlements we intended to implement."

"Consequently, dual elements remain to that, within the manifesto, the significant entitlements and the dialogue."
