American Leaders Are Removing African American Heritage: Why This Threatens The Nation's Tomorrow

Democratic systems prospers when Black Americans advance. Research demonstrates: birthright citizenship, constitutional due process, anti-discrimination laws from education to housing to employment and equitable small business investments are all byproducts the systemic corrections currently called DEI. However, recently, DEI has been used as a diversion by calculating policymakers and campaigners to reverse advancements and strengthen control.

The Concrete Impact of These Strategies

The impact of these tactics is concrete and undeniable. Beginning this year, studies indicate showing over three hundred thousand Black women have lost their jobs while $3.4bn in funding initiatives investing in Black communities has been eliminated – comprising $9.4 million in sickle cell disease research, $42m for initiatives designed to address Black maternal mortality and $31m in cuts to address asthma rates and air pollution affecting African American youth.

Historical Perspective and Wider Consequences

Concerted attempts to suppress the progress of Black communities isn't novel; nevertheless, history has proven that when advancements for African Americans are removed, everyone suffers. In the Reconstruction era, Black Americans made extraordinary strides – serving in government, building businesses and creating educational institutions. Less discussed is the way other oppressed communities, including poor white farmers to Latino gauchos, similarly gained from increased access to legal and economic systems.

Misrepresentation represents one of the most insidious tactics. It alters truth in ways that narrow our expectations and institutionalizes prejudice through legislation.

When Black people encountered decades of segregation laws and state-sanctioned discrimination, other communities experienced comparable setbacks regarding their entry to full citizenship. When the civil rights movement sought to eliminate the remnants of segregation, its practices of peaceful protest expanded freedom and opportunity not only for African Americans, but also for populations from every demographic. Including Indigenous rights activism to the advancement of gay rights to female financial independence, Black civil rights opened the aperture for expanded human rights.

Current Challenges with Deliberate Campaigns

Nevertheless, every time African American neighborhoods gain ground, forces threatened by change work to push us back. While confronting present leadership, DEI is the bulwark that guarantees a pluralistic democracy. Its strength is rooted not in politics, but from the ideal of America itself: that all people are created equal and merit opportunity to succeed.

We must understand these attacks as part of a deliberate campaign. The objective is to rewrite the country's narrative and limit the futures of Black Americans, and by extension, any American deemed unworthy. It's easy to perceive these measures in isolation, but that is by design.

Educational and Economic Consequences

Educational funding and academic initiatives face elimination, leaving Black students with reduced opportunities to pursue a quality education. These reductions similarly impact Indigenous learners and served as a predicate for attacks on Latino scholars. Black families still reside in districts having poorly funded education because of longstanding practices of separation and disparity, and the concomitant effect of cutting programs disproportionately harms all low-income children and individuals with disabilities.

Support for Black-owned businesses and vital health initiatives has been reduced, causing the country lacking the information needed to confront systemic disparities in our economy and healthcare system. The subsequent impact will weaken studies and funding for females of all ethnic backgrounds. Through altering who counts, who is appreciated and what histories are taught, these policies intensify the obstacles that populations have struggled for generations to overcome.

Elimination and Censorship in Tandem

Removal and censorship work in tandem, and practitioners predictably start with Black America. Those seeking to cripple democracy have eliminated African American narratives from educational materials, displays and public memory, depriving us of the lessons about resistance, remediation and redemption. Growing authoritarian regimes understand how to influence educational institutions, colleges, corporations and government institutions toward quiet compliance.

The Path Forward and Shared Duty

The question before us now is: how will we respond in response? Should we permit fear, disinformation and autocracy to determine the future? Or should we take action, determinedly and intentionally, to defend the truth, honor Black progress and safeguard the right to opportunity for every American? The answer will influence not just this moment, but the very future of the nation.

Protecting and defending the historic progress achieved represents an ethical necessity, requiring concerted civil action. Like the fight for freedom has taught us, when we struggle for freedom, we succeed. We absolutely face coordinated attacks on truth, designed to sow despair or lead to inaction – but we must prevent this.

The country's tomorrow won't come automatically. Achievement or downfall will depend on our decisions to act and oppose today.

America's story started with the principle that from diversity, we could become one. E pluribus unum is the essence of diversity, equity and inclusion, the lived reality for African Americans and the evidence that we can create something bigger beyond anxiety and hopelessness. Collectively, we can preserve access, respect reality and reinforce our democracy for generations to come.
